TACOMA: Pass bond issue for parks’ future

Tacoma has a joyous opportunity to make an investment in the future while honoring the rich legacy of conservation and education already established at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. The time for action is now. Metro Parks Proposition 1 on the April 22 ballot needs voter approval.

Imagine a new aquarium in which you can see not only Northwest marine animals but also sea turtles, hammerhead sharks and other Pacific Rim species. Think of more space for polar bears and walruses where excited children can watch them from wonderful new vantage points. It’s all included Metro Parks Tacoma’s Proposition 1.

Fittingly, the deadline for returning ballots is Earth Day, April 22, but marking and returning your ballot now will ensure it arrives in time to be counted.

As a Zoo Society board member, I’ve worked hand-and-heart with the committed and caring staff at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Our zoo is globally recognized as a leader in conservation and at the forefront of breeding programs that add to the world’s population of endangered Sumatran tigers, clouded leopards, red wolves and other animals.

Passage of this bond issue could enable a future polar bear breeding program as the staff – with support of the community – works to further this species so threatened by climate change.

Replacement of the 51-year-old North Pacific Aquarium will continue a legacy of showcasing marine animals that dates back to the 1930s.

Please vote yes on Proposition 1.
